(Whilst sitting constipated on the toilet for ages, thus cutting off the blood supply to my legs)
#Crazy and true.
I Went for a wander the other day around town, armed with more money than I should be legally allowed. During this walkabout, I spent an inordinately large (for me) amount of money. Let's just say I got no change from £200, or in dollars roughly $350ish.
I got a few presents. Too few. I am not going to make myself destitute buying expensive presents for all and sundry this year. I am away and not really doing Christmas, this year anyway, but I will play Santa and deliver presents round the 'Kin relatives... (Believe me when I say I am nearly organised this Christmas)
I bought myself a few books. A couple of reference books, which I will read once and soak the factoids up and store away, both the book and the facts, to be used in an anecdote, or if a suitable conversation arises, in which to slip a piece of salient information...
I also bought some clothes, bandanas and a Scarf.... (OH! And the usual high-brow comics, like The Simpsons and Spiderman)
So back to what I just learnt. Let me share a few....
FACTS.
- Canada. If you take into account all its islands, Canada has the longest shoreline on Earth. More than six times round the Equator, equivalent to Approximately:- 164,988 miles (265,523 km)
- Bananas. India (Well over a quarter of the worlds yearly yield) grows over 22 MILLION tonnes of this herb. Botanically the Banana is a herb. They grow upwards too on the tree, in Hands of 10 to 20 fingers, or Bananas per hand.
- Potato. Green potatoes can contain a poison called Solanine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solanine Many of the potatoes I eat are green.....
- Sugar Cane. The world consumes 1, 557, 664, 978 TONNES Per Annum. (I am responsible for consuming about 13% amount on a weekly basis :)
- Forests. Cover 29.6% of the Earths land. A quarter of these forests are in Russia.
- The Pacific Ocean. At its deepest points is, 10, 924 metres to the floor (35, 837 feet) Making it the deepest of the oceans.
- Icebergs. We all know that 7/8 of an iceberg lies below the waterline. Hence the saying, Tip Of The Iceberg. BUT 75% of the worlds fresh water is thought to be in these glaciers. Conjecture has it that if all the Glaciers and Icebergs melted, sea levels would rise by 70 metres!
So has any of that amazed you? It has me. I am off to throw some potatoes away and make coffee... 3 sugars.
